末広温泉の番台受付に、剥がれたタイルが重ねて置いてあった。
「これ、剥がれたタイルですか？ もし処分される予定なら、いただいてもいいですか？」と組合長の勝さんに尋ねたところ、譲っていただけることになった。

別府には、地域の方々によって管理されている共同浴場、ジモ泉（“地元の温泉”の略）がたくさんある。

そのひとつ、末広温泉の剥がれたタイルを眺めていると、無色透明の湯が流れる光景が浮かんでくる。

清島アパートに入居してからは、別府滞在中ほぼ毎日この温泉に通っており、そこで交わされた人々の会話も、自然と記憶によみがえる。
